Latest company news about Seajet Antifouling Coating A Guide to Boat Protection

An unprotected fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) boat hull, like uncut jade, holds great potential but faces significant risks from marine organisms. Proper hull coating is essential for maintaining vessel performance and longevity. This comprehensive guide outlines the step-by-step process for applying protective coatings to new boat hulls.

1. Preparation: Gathering Essential Materials

Proper preparation is crucial for successful hull coating. Below are the necessary materials and tools:

Essential Materials:
  • Antifouling paint (Seajet 033 PREMIUM, 033, 037, or 039)
  • Primer (Seajet 013 or 015)
  • Specialized thinner (Seajet Thinner A or D)
  • Cleaning agents (acetone or polyurethane/epoxy thinner)
Application Tools:
  • Rollers and brushes (5-10cm)
  • Paint tray
  • Scraper
  • Mixing stick
  • Painter's tape (24mm)
  • Sandpaper (No.180-240) or sanding sponge
Safety Equipment:
  • Safety goggles
  • Protective cap
  • Dust mask
  • Gloves
  • Coveralls
Important Safety Notes:
  • Always review product instructions, safety data sheets, and warning labels
  • For multi-component products, strictly follow mixing ratios and working time limitations
  • Thoroughly stir paint before application
  • Only use manufacturer-approved thinners
  • Avoid application during rainy or high-humidity conditions
  • Wear complete protective gear during application
  • Store paint in cool, dry locations
2. Hull Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation ensures optimal paint adhesion and performance:

Cleaning:

Thoroughly wipe the hull surface with acetone or polyurethane/epoxy thinner to remove mold release agents, wax, and other contaminants.

Sanding:

Use dry sandpaper (No.180-240) or sanding sponge to uniformly abrade the surface until it loses its gloss. This creates texture for better paint adhesion.

Final Cleaning:

Rinse the hull with clean water to remove all sanding residue and allow complete drying.

3. Masking Protection

Apply painter's tape along the hull-to-deck junction (above the waterline). Narrow tape works best for following curved surfaces and creating clean edges.

4. Primer Application

Primer enhances antifouling paint adhesion and durability. Seajet offers two high-performance options:

Seajet 013: Two-Component Epoxy Primer
  • Mix ratio: 4:1 by volume (86.6:13.4 by weight)
  • Application: Brush in single-direction strokes
  • Thinning: Use Seajet Thinner D (0-10% for spraying, 0-5% for brush/roller)
  • Pot life: 7 hours at 20°C
Seajet 015: Single-Component Primer
  • Application: Thin coats with single-direction strokes
  • Thinning: Use Seajet Thinner A (0-5%)
5. Antifouling Paint Application

Select appropriate antifouling paint (Seajet 033 PREMIUM, 033, 037, or 039) and apply two coats for optimal protection:

  • Apply using single-direction strokes
  • Maintain proper coating thickness
  • Thin with Seajet Thinner A (0-5%) if needed
  • Observe recommended recoating intervals
6. Launch Preparation

Allow complete paint drying before launching. Drying time varies by product type and environmental conditions.

Following these steps will create an effective antifouling barrier, preventing marine growth and extending hull life while reducing maintenance requirements.
